IDAI warns against raw eggs for infants after baby's death

The Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) has issued a strong warning against giving raw or undercooked eggs to infants and children due to the risk of Salmonella infection. This advisory follows the death of a 28-day-old baby, Alena, in Surabaya, East Java. The infant reportedly passed away after being given raw eggs by a family member in an attempt to treat a fever.

Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, Chairperson of IDAI, emphasized that raw eggs pose significant food safety risks and can lead to salmonellosis, causing symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and severe dehydration. In infants, these infections can lead to serious complications.

Medical experts and IDAI reiterate that breast milk is the best nutrition for infants under six months. Complementary foods (MPASI) should generally only be introduced at six months, once a child shows developmental readiness, such as the ability to control their head and neck and sit with assistance. Eggs can be a high-quality protein source for children, but they must be thoroughly cooked to ensure safety.
