Infant sleep: Pediatric advice and scientific methods for soothing babies
Pediatric experts and recent scientific studies offer guidance on managing infant sleep and soothing crying babies. Recommendations from organizations such as UNICEF and the Canadian Paediatric Society emphasize understanding a baby's unique sleep rhythms, creating a secure environment, and establishing consistent bedtime routines.
Research from the RIKEN Center for Brain Science in Japan, published in 'Current Biology', suggests that walking while holding a crying infant is a highly effective method for calming them. The study, which monitored heart rates and behaviors, found that infants' heart rates slowed within 30 seconds when being carried or placed in rocking beds. Specifically, walking with a baby helped all participants stop crying, with half falling asleep within five minutes. To prevent immediate waking upon being placed in a crib, researchers suggest walking with the baby for five minutes, followed by sitting and holding them for an additional five to eight minutes.
