Infanta Sofía delivers her first solo speech in Zaragoza
On July 8, 19‑year‑old Infanta Sofía, second in the line of succession to the Spanish throne, gave her first official solo speech while presiding as president‑honor of the Fundación Ibercaja’s Docentes Referentes awards in Zaragoza. The event marked her inaugural address to a public audience and highlighted her gradual integration into the Crown’s institutional activities.
The ceremony, part of the foundation’s programme to recognise innovative education projects, featured Sofía presenting the first set of grants. Although she has previously attended solo engagements, this was the first occasion she spoke publicly. Commentary noted the absence of former King Juan Carlos, who has not taken part in recent royal events.
Sofía’s public role is developing alongside that of her elder sister, Princess Leonor, who is expected to assume the throne. The Infanta continues her academic studies in political science and international relations while increasing her visibility in state functions.
