Infanta Sofía delivers first official public speech in Zaragoza
Infanta Sofía, 19, gave her first official public speech at the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Cogullada in Zaragoza. The address was part of the inaugural Docentes Referentes awards organised by Fundación Ibercaja, where she acted as honorary president. In her remarks she highlighted the value of teachers, stating “Nadie elige enseñar por dinero o por reconocimiento”.
The ceremony honoured five teachers selected from 25 finalists out of 478 applications submitted across Spain. Sofía participated in workshops with the award‑winning educators before delivering her speech.
King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and Princess Leonor arrived unexpectedly to support their younger daughter, joining her on stage and later sharing a spontaneous moment clapping along with a choir in the monastery gardens. The event underscored the Crown’s public advocacy for education and marked a milestone in the public duties of the younger generation of the Spanish royal family.
