Infineon and SolarEdge partner on solid-state circuit breakers
Infineon and SolarEdge Technologies have extended their collaboration to develop solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) technology. This initiative targets high-voltage DC distribution for AI and hyperscale data centers, specifically addressing the challenges of 800 VDC architecture.
Unlike traditional AC systems, DC distribution lacks a natural current zero, making mechanical interruption difficult due to arcing and slow response times. The new SSCB solution aims to interrupt faults within microseconds without mechanical contacts. SolarEdge is leading the design of the solution, while Infineon provides its silicon carbide (SiC) JFET technology to ensure efficient and robust protection.
The collaboration seeks to bridge the gap between solid-state transformers and compute racks to create a comprehensive grid-to-rack solution. This technology is intended to protect high-value compute equipment and enable more compact, high-density DC distribution designs.
