Infineon and X‑Fab boost German semiconductor capacity with new factories

Infineon X‑Fab German semiconductor fab EU Chips Act MEMS production

Infineon Technologies will open its €5 billion "Smart Power Fab" in Dresden on 2 July 2026, three months ahead of schedule. The plant will produce power chips for decarbonisation and AI data‑centre energy supplies and forms a cornerstone of the EU’s Chips Act programme.

Separately, X‑Fab announced a €400 million expansion in Erfurt, dubbed "Fab4Micro", financed with €127.4 million of German‑EU subsidies. The new clean‑room, slated for operation by the end of 2028, will focus on MEMS, micro‑system and photonic components used in smartphones, automotive, medical and data‑centre applications. Both projects are intended to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor supply chain and create high‑tech jobs in Germany.
