Infineon Technologies launches integrated PMIC for electric vehicle traction inverters

Infineon Technologies has introduced the OPTIREG PMIC TLE9744QK, a fully integrated Power Management IC designed for high-voltage traction inverter applications in electric and hybrid vehicles. The device consolidates power supply functions, resolver excitation, and a dedicated safety engine into a single chip.

This integration aims to simplify Electronic Control Unit (ECU) design by addressing the challenge of supplying multiple isolated power rails for sensors, communication modules, and microcontrollers. By replacing discrete components, the solution can reduce the PCB footprint by up to 70 percent and lower the bill-of-materials count, which helps reduce system cost and complexity.

The chip features an Integrated Safety Logic (ISL) that acts as an independent hardware architecture to supervise critical parameters such as phase currents and DC-link voltage. In the event of a main microcontroller dysfunction, the ISL is designed to enforce a safe state. To maintain protection during power faults, the device includes a redundant supply input to keep the safety logic operational if the main low-voltage supply fails.
