Infineon to invest €1.1 billion in Austrian semiconductor facility

Infineon Technologies AG has announced a €1.1 billion investment to expand its Villach site in Austria through 2034. The project aims to establish the world’s first high-volume manufacturing facility for next-generation gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductors using 300mm wafers.

This technological shift from 200mm to 300mm wafers is expected to increase chip production by approximately 2.3 times per wafer. GaN technology offers superior energy efficiency, faster switching, and reduced heat generation compared to traditional silicon, making it critical for AI data centers, electric vehicles, robotics, and energy infrastructure.

The expansion is supported by the European Chips Act, with the European Commission approving €319 million in state aid. Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker described the project as one of the largest single investments in the history of Austria’s high-tech industry, noting its importance for European technological sovereignty.
