Inflation impacts Japanese household spending and consumer habits
Rising inflation and the increasing cost of food and daily necessities are significantly impacting household management and consumer behavior in Japan.
In one instance, a household faced severe tension when a husband provided only 40,000 yen per month for living expenses despite demanding high-end brands. The resulting extreme frugality led to hygiene issues and domestic conflict before the husband was confronted with the actual cost of groceries at a supermarket.
On a broader scale, elderly citizens living on fixed pensions are also feeling the pressure. A 74-year-old man living on a monthly pension of 180,000 yen reported having to forgo previously enjoyed items like sashimi and fruit due to rising prices. According to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the 2025 average consumer price index showed a 3.2% overall increase, with food prices specifically rising by 6.8%.
