UK and Canada inflation rises amid energy and fuel price surges

Inflation in the United Kingdom rose to 2.9% in July, up from 2.6% in June, marking its highest level since March. This increase was primarily driven by a 13% rise in the Ofgem energy price cap, which increased average annual household bills to £1,862. Chancellor John Healey attributed the surge to the impact of the Middle East conflict on energy prices. While services inflation eased slightly to 3.4%, food inflation dropped to 1.3%, the lowest in nearly five years.

In Canada, annual inflation accelerated to 3% in July, up from 2.8% in June. This rise was largely fueled by a 25.7% year-over-year jump in gasoline prices, linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, travel and tour costs rose significantly, partly due to increased demand surrounding the FIFA World Cup. Excluding gasoline, Canada's inflation rate remained at 2.2% for the third consecutive month.
