Inflation trends show rising costs in the US and Argentina
In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an increase in inflation for September. The annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 3.7% from 3.4% in August, with a monthly increase of 0.6%. This uptick is largely driven by energy costs; gasoline prices rose 9.1% in September, contributing to more than half of the monthly inflation increase. Diesel prices have seen a 70% increase since February, creating a domino effect across transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors.
In Argentina, inflation remains a persistent challenge despite a deceleration. The CPI recorded a 1.9% increase in September, up from 1.7% in August. While monthly inflation is projected to hover around 2% through December, consumer spending has not recovered. Food and beverage prices continue to pressure household budgets, with weekly surveys showing consistent increases in categories such as beverages and meats, leading many consumers to reduce purchase sizes or rely on informal credit in local shops.
