Influencer Karen Flowers Targeted by AI Deepfake Advertising Scam
Karen Flowers, a 49‑year‑old beauty influencer from Virginia and founder of the hair‑care line Curl House, discovered a deep‑fake video on YouTube that used her likeness to promote a life‑insurance product she does not sell. She said she recognized the image but noted the lips were synced to words she never spoke.
Investigators say criminal groups abroad are exploiting artificial‑intelligence tools to clone the faces of social‑media personalities and celebrities, then flooding the internet with fabricated ads and scams. The FBI estimates such copy‑cat schemes have ripped off Americans of about $893 million in 2025 alone. Google has recently sued a Chinese network called Outsider Enterprise, alleging it used Google AI to generate phony websites and push more than 100,000 financial scams. The deep‑fake trend, which has also hit stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian and Tom Hanks, highlights growing challenges for influencers and platforms in combating AI‑driven fraud.
