Indonesia reports rise in Influenza A cases across 38 provinces

Indonesia is experiencing a rise in Influenza A cases, with the proportion of positive specimens increasing to 51 percent in the third week of September 2026, up from 37 percent the previous week. The A(H1N1)pdm09 subtype is currently the most dominant, though the H3N2 subtype has also been detected in several provinces. The Ministry of Health reports that while detections are rising, national influenza activity remains in the low category and the situation is considered under control.

Toddlers and young children are the most affected demographic, accounting for approximately 42 percent of cases. The Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) has issued warnings regarding the vulnerability of children, noting that they face higher risks of serious complications such as pneumonia and myocarditis. IDAI recommends annual vaccinations for children starting at six months of age.

In Bandung, local authorities have reported crowded emergency rooms due to patients presenting with high fever, cough, and respiratory symptoms. Mayor Muhammad Farhan has instructed healthcare facilities to increase vigilance and maintain readiness without causing public panic. He also advised parents to keep symptomatic children home from school to prevent further transmission.
