Indonesia sees rise in influenza cases amid regional surge

Indonesia is experiencing a rise in influenza cases, particularly Influenza A, which has led to increased hospital admissions and crowded emergency departments in major cities like Bandung and Surabaya. The Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) has noted a significant surge in pediatric cases and is calling for better mapping of virus spread patterns to assist medical professionals.

On a regional level, the World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional Office (WHO WPRO) reports an increase in influenza cases across Southeast Asia. Notable rises have been observed in Singapore and Brunei Darussalam. Experts suggest that increased travel and regional trends contribute to these fluctuations.

The Indonesian Ministry of Health maintains that the current national situation remains seasonal and under control, though they acknowledge the rise in influenza-like illnesses (ILI). Medical professionals emphasize that while many recover within a week, vulnerable groups—including young children, toddlers, and the elderly—face higher risks of severe complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Vaccination is recommended for individuals starting from six months of age to mitigate these risks.
