Respiratory infections rise across Europe and the Balkans

Health authorities in several regions are reporting an increase in respiratory infections. In England, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has noted that influenza activity is rising earlier than usual, with increased emergency department visits and positive tests observed since August. Experts suggest vaccination is a key preventative measure.

In Republika Srpska, the Institute for Public Health reported over 4,200 acute respiratory infections and 479 flu-like illnesses between late September and early October. Thirteen individuals required hospitalization for severe infections, primarily among younger age groups. Vaccination is expected to begin in November.

In Slovenia, medical experts have introduced long-acting monoclonal antibody immunization to protect newborns and infants under six months from Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) as the colder season approaches. Additionally, in Croatia, the Clinical Hospital Center Osijek has implemented a ban on visitors to intensive care units due to the increased frequency of respiratory infections.
