Influenza cases rise across Indonesia and Singapore
Influenza activity is rising across Southeast Asia, with notable increases reported in Indonesia and Singapore.
In Indonesia, the Ministry of Health has observed a rise in influenza cases, specifically noting that the H1N1pdm09 subtype is currently dominant. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that while surveillance data places the current situation within a medium range, the government is strengthening surveillance and preparedness to monitor developments. Health officials have advised the public to distinguish influenza from the common cold, noting that influenza typically presents with more severe symptoms such as sudden fever, chills, and muscle aches.
In Singapore, influenza activity has reached its highest level in 32 months. Data from the Communicable Diseases Agency shows that 44% of respiratory samples tested positive between late September and early October, a significant increase from 20% in August. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung reported an increase in patients seeking treatment for respiratory issues at emergency departments and polyclinics, a trend potentially exacerbated by recent hazy weather conditions.
