Influenza cases rise in Singapore and Kerala

Influenza activity is seeing notable shifts in different regions. In Singapore, the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) reported that influenza positivity rose to 36.6 per cent during the week of August 16 to 22, up from 24 per cent the previous week. Despite this increase, levels remain below the 43.9 per cent peak recorded in January last year. Health authorities noted that seasonal viruses typically circulate in bimodal peaks corresponding to Northern and Southern Hemisphere winters.

In Kerala, India, H1N1 infections have resulted in over 100 deaths as of September 1, a figure more than double the number of deaths reported during the same period last year. A total of 8,852 people have tested positive for the infection so far. While the mortality rate has increased to 1.1 per cent compared to 0.67 per cent last year, health officials stated the rise is seasonal and does not indicate an unusual outbreak.

Medical professionals in both regions advise symptomatic individuals to stay home, wear masks, and minimize social contact to prevent spread. High-risk groups, including seniors, young children, and those with underlying medical conditions, are encouraged to seek vaccination.
