Romania and Moldova face energy security challenges
Romania and Moldova are facing energy stability challenges due to regional shortages and infrastructure issues. In Romania, the temporary shutdown of a reactor at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, driven by low Danube water levels, has sparked political debate. Critics highlight the high economic costs of the crisis, with some estimates suggesting costs of millions of euros per day, and point to a lack of specialized personnel to manage coal-fired plants as they attempt to reactivate them.
In Moldova, Energocom reported that electricity needs for August 16 were 100% covered commercially through imports and renewable sources, though the regional market remains difficult and expensive.
To assist citizens, InfoCons has launched a consumer protection center dedicated to energy, providing guidance on electricity and gas bills, contracts, and the process of switching suppliers.
