Infonavit expands Mexico housing program as delivery target falls short

The Institute of the Fund for Workers' Housing (Infonavit) handed over 1,059 new homes in the "Infonavit Las Campanas" development in Cadereyta Jiménez, Nuevo León, as part of its broader Housing for Well‑Being program. The delivery marks the fourth Infonavit hand‑over in the state and the 36th nationwide, contributing to a goal of building 67,000 homes in Nuevo León and more than 1.2 million homes across Mexico during the current six‑year term, with an investment exceeding 40 billion pesos.

Infonavit officials, including director‑general Octavio Romero Oropeza, warned that the agency is unlikely to meet its 2024 target of 400,000 homes under the program. To address the shortfall, the institute plans to broaden eligibility, allowing workers earning up to 2.9 minimum wages to apply, potentially reaching about 50 million workers. The expansion comes amid concerns over the program’s allocation, with reports of contracts awarded to firms linked to political figures. The government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda of Nuevo León, continues to promote the initiative as a key component of affordable‑housing policy.
