Informer tabloid faces backlash over Croatian wildfire headline

The Serbian tabloid Informer has faced intense public condemnation following its headline regarding catastrophic wildfires in Croatia. The publication used the phrase ‘Izgore im Lijepa njihova’, a headline that sparked significant backlash and mockery on social media from both sides of the border.

Critics have compared the headline to a 2017 cover from the Croatian minority newspaper Novosti, though commentators note the contexts differ. In response to the controversy, the Nezavisna lista Tomislava Jonjića issued a statement expressing condolences to those affected by the Omiš fire. The group criticized the lack of assistance from neighboring countries while Croatian firefighters combat blazes across Europe and the Mediterranean. They also called for improved fire defense systems and a shift in vegetation management, suggesting a move away from highly flammable pine forests toward olive groves and vineyards.
