Infotainment systems emerge as primary reliability risk in new vehicles

A study by J. D. Power reveals that infotainment systems have become the primary source of issues in new vehicles. While mechanical components like engines and brakes are becoming more reliable, the multimedia and cockpit technology now accounts for approximately one-quarter of all reported problems. The study, which surveyed 78,514 new car owners after 90 days of ownership, found 42.4 problems per 100 vehicles in the infotainment segment.

This trend is attributed to the increasing complexity and responsibility of cockpit technology, which now manages navigation, smartphone connectivity, climate control, and vehicle settings. As these systems take on more essential functions, user expectations for seamless performance have risen.

In the context of in-car connectivity, technical specifications significantly impact user experience. For instance, achieving high-resolution audio via Apple CarPlay requires a wired USB connection to support Lossless audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Wireless connections, which rely on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, typically use compressed formats like AAC-LC, whereas wired connections utilize LPCM for uncompressed transmission. To maximize audio quality, users must also manually adjust settings within streaming services such as Apple Music, Tidal, and Spotify.
