Dominican Republic government faces protests over RD$595 million agricultural debt

Deputy Melido Mercedes has reported that the Dominican Republic government owes RD$595 million to agricultural producers and tractor owners. The debt includes RD$205 million for onion producers in Vallejuelo and the south, RD$240 million for bean producers, and RD$150 million for tractor owners responsible for land preparation.

Following a previous agreement where authorities established a 15-day deadline for payments, the deadline has passed without the funds being disbursed. Consequently, producers and machinery operators have agreed to resume protests and strikes in the southern region. These actions follow previous demonstrations that included road blockades and the temporary detention of tractor union leaders.

Mercedes, a representative of the Fuerza del Pueblo, criticized the current administration of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), stating that the delays impact food security and reflect a decline in agricultural support, health, and education services.
