Infrastructure and historical sites in Belgium undergo renovation planning
Infrastructure and historical sites in Belgium are undergoing planning and design phases for renovation. In Gent, the tram stop near the Gravensteen is set to become more accessible for wheelchair users by 2028. This project is linked to the replacement of the Hoofdbrug and a broader study involving the redesign of Sint-Veerleplein. While plans for the inbound stop are concrete, timelines for the outbound stop remain undetermined due to the challenges of integrating modern accessibility into a historic urban environment.
In Herentals, the Tourist Tower has been closed to the public since April of last year following an inspection that revealed serious stability flaws. Damage to the supporting beams of the floor levels, caused by mold and fungi, rendered the platforms unsafe for visitors. The city has released initial renovation designs produced by the study firm ARAT. Although the cafeteria remains open, there is currently no specific date for the commencement of construction or the tower's reopening.
