Infrastructure and preservation projects underway in Mechelen and Antwerp
Various urban renewal and preservation projects are progressing in Belgium. In Mechelen, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-over-de-Dijle church is undergoing maintenance as part of a climate-resilience program. Recent work includes painting exterior woodwork and iron fittings to protect the structure against heavy rain, storms, and drought. Future phases aim to protect stained-glass windows with safety glass and reinforce the wooden spire to prevent storm damage.
In Antwerp, the redevelopment of the Wapper square has reached a new milestone with the start of paving works. Following extensive underground infrastructure improvements—including renovated sewage systems, rainwater separation, and a circular water supply for greenery—the square is expected to be partially accessible to pedestrians by late November. The full project is slated for completion in the spring of 2028. Archaeological excavations during the preparation phase uncovered historical cellars, walls, and artifacts, providing insight into the site's history.
