Infrastructure and sanitation issues reported in Bengaluru, Secunderabad, and Hyderabad
Various urban infrastructure and sanitation challenges have been reported across major Indian cities. In Bengaluru, proposed road networks by the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the Bengaluru Development Authority have sparked environmental concerns. Experts warn that several planned routes may pass through lake buffer zones and stormwater drains, potentially impacting lakes such as Bellandur, Begur, and Doddanekundi, which could increase urban flooding risks.
In Secunderabad Cantonment, residents of New Vasavinagar have reported drinking water contamination for six months. Local community members allege that sewage is entering the supply through a damaged pipeline. While the Cantonment Board has urged water conservation, residents and local officials are calling for urgent pipeline repairs and water quality testing.
In Hyderabad, residents near Bathukammakunta lake in Amberpet are protesting the discharge of household drainage into stormwater outlet channels. Following drainage pipeline repairs, municipal staff allegedly allowed sewage to flow into channels rather than the proper network, leading to foul odors and increased mosquito breeding, which residents link to rising cases of dengue and malaria.
