Infrastructure and waste management updates in Spain and Guatemala
Waste removal operations have resumed at the Los Mateos site in Cartagena, Spain, following delays caused by the discovery of fibrocement and new labor safety requirements. The project is expected to conclude by late November, though local authorities aim to finish sooner if technical conditions allow. Workers will first clear 25 waste piles, transporting materials to the Fuente Álamo non-hazardous waste landfill. To prevent dust dispersion, water will be used to dampen the ground during loading.
In Guatemala, technical studies have identified severe structural damage to a bridge located at the intersection of Aguilar Batres and the Anillo Periférico. The structure, which is over 50 years old, shows severe shear cracking and fissures in a main longitudinal beam. Covial, the road conservation unit, will begin temporary emergency repairs in October using concrete injection and carbon fiber to restore functionality. A permanent solution or partial replacement will require further evaluation by the Municipality of Guatemala.
