Colombia faces widespread emergencies from heavy rainfall

Heavy rainfall has triggered multiple emergencies across various regions of Colombia, causing flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage. In the Caribbean region, Santa Marta has declared a red alert due to the risk of sudden river rises in the Piedras and Manzanares basins, affecting sectors like Ciudad Equidad and Gaira. Cartagena has also reported significant flooding in several neighborhoods, necessitating emergency rescues by firefighters.

In the Valle del Cauca, landslides in the La Balastrera sector near Dagua have forced authorities to implement controlled traffic measures on the road to the port. Meanwhile, in Córdoba, seven municipalities have reported flooding, with restrictions placed on the Montería–Arboletes highway. In Montería, blocked drainage channels due to accumulated waste have exacerbated flooding in the Ranchos del INAT sector.

Other affected areas include Santander, where the overflowing of the El Aventadero stream has isolated rural communities between El Peñón and Sucre, hindering access to medical services and agricultural commerce. In the Aburrá Valley, the SIATA system has issued warnings for continued rainfall across Medellín, Envigado, and Sabaneta through the coming days.
