Infrastructure concerns rise in Castro and Campo de Gibraltar

Community leaders in Castro, Chile, have denounced the deteriorating state of rural and island roads. Yasna Villegas, president of the Unión Comunal de Juntas de Vecinos Rurales de Castro, described the situation as “disastrous,” noting that persistent rains have worsened infrastructure managed by both the Municipality of Castro and the Provincial Directorate of Highways (Vialidad).

Villegas stated that residents have been patient for a year, but the lack of adequate machinery and poor quality of materials used for repairs have made connectivity unsustainable. The municipality has reportedly responded that it lacks sufficient machinery to address needs beyond immediate emergencies.

In Spain, the political formation 100x100 Unidos has criticized the ongoing summer collapse of infrastructure in the Campo de Gibraltar region. The group highlights severe traffic congestion on the A-7 and N-340 highways, as well as significant deficiencies in the railway network.

According to the group, the saturation of these strategic routes is not merely a seasonal issue caused by summer tourism, but the result of decades of insufficient planning and investment. They are calling for urgent improvements, such as expanding the A-7 to three lanes in high-conflict areas, to support the high volume of people, vehicles, and goods passing through the region.
