Infrastructure concerns rise over deteriorating bridges in Bolivia and Peru

Infrastructure concerns have surfaced in both Bolivia and Peru following reports of deteriorating bridge conditions.

In Bolivia, transport workers are demanding action from the Administradora Boliviana de Carreteras (ABC) regarding the Sevaruyo Bridge on National Route 30 in the Oruro department. The bridge, which connects Oruro with Uyuni and Villazón, has suffered severe structural damage, including a large hole where concrete has vanished, exposing the underlying steel structure. This deterioration led to a significant accident involving a heavy truck on August 27, 2026, exacerbated by poor visibility and a lack of signage.

In Peru, Lima Mayor Renzo Reggiardo has blamed the concessionaire Rutas de Lima for the critical state of several vehicular bridges in the capital, including the Chillón Bridge on the Panamericana Norte. Reggiardo stated that the municipality recently took over highway administration after the private company ceased maintenance services, leaving the infrastructure in a state of abandonment. The Mayor confirmed that the municipality has the necessary budget to begin repair works in the coming weeks to address the risks posed by heavy cargo traffic.
