Infrastructure crisis: Road degradation hampers transport in Guinea and Central African Republic

Severe road degradation is causing significant transport and economic challenges in Guinea and the Central African Republic.

In Guinea, motorcycle taxi drivers in the Guéckédou region report that roads connecting the capital to sub-prefectures such as Nongoa, Bolodou, and Koundou have become nearly impassable due to the rainy season. Drivers face frequent mechanical breakdowns and safety risks, noting that light vehicles and trucks can no longer navigate these routes. Local transport workers are calling on authorities for urgent infrastructure rehabilitation.

In the Central African Republic, the Bangui-Bangassou national road (RN2) is in a state of extreme disrepair, with reports of drivers being stuck in mud for weeks. The lack of maintenance has led to deep potholes, broken bridges, and heavy vehicles becoming trapped in mud, which threatens goods like cement and increases market prices. While drivers face risks from both the terrain and security threats, government sources indicate that a rehabilitation project for this route is planned.
