Infrastructure decay hampers transport in Senegal and Guinea

Infrastructure decay is causing significant logistical and economic challenges in parts of Senegal and Guinea.

In Senegal, the road connecting Wack Ngouna to Keur Yoro Khodia in the Nioro du Rip department has reached an advanced state of degradation. Local officials note that the route, which serves as a vital corridor between Sokone and Nioro du Rip, has not undergone rehabilitation since its initial construction. The road is considered economically significant for the ECOWAS region, as it is frequently used by traders and transporters from Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, and Niger to move agricultural and livestock products.

In Guinea, the 15-kilometer stretch between Kodiaran and Koromadou in the Mandiana prefecture is also facing severe deterioration. The onset of the rainy season has exacerbated the situation, creating potholes and mud pits that make travel difficult. Local gold miners and transporters report that the impassable conditions significantly delay the movement of equipment and goods, with some journeys taking days to cover short distances, thereby increasing operational costs and damaging vehicles.
