Infrastructure development transforms rural connectivity in Guizhou and Qinghai

Infrastructure developments in rural China are transforming local economies and preserving historical legacies. In Shaozhai Village, Guizhou Province, the construction of the ‘New Red Army Bridge’ in 2019 has significantly improved connectivity. Previously, villagers relied on a narrow wooden bridge with historical ties to the Red Army’s Long March in 1934. The new cement bridge has enabled approximately 70% of villagers to purchase vehicles, facilitating the transport of local products like tea oil, peaches, and watermelons, while attracting roughly 50,000 annual visitors for educational and tourism purposes.

Similarly, along the Tongtian River in Yushu, Qinghai Province, the evolution of transport has shifted from traditional oxhide rafts to modern bridges. The Zhimen Da Village, home to the historic Zhiben family of ferrymen, has transitioned from a reliance on river crossings to utilizing the Tongtian River Bridge, the Tongtian River Modern Bridge, and the Tongtian River Expressway Bridge. These structures have not only improved safety and travel efficiency but also served as vital lifelines, such as the bridge that remained intact during the 2010 Yushu earthquake.
