Infrastructure disputes arise over bridge projects in Jülich and Halle

In Jülich, political debate continues regarding the reconstruction of the Heckfeldbrücke. While the SPD faction seeks to utilize 15.5 million euros in state funding from the North Rhine-Westphalia infrastructure plan, the administration has proposed using those funds for school renovations and fire station construction instead. The CDU has expressed support for the bridge but argues against using special assets, suggesting the project be funded through the general budget to avoid prioritizing the bridge over educational facilities.

In Halle, a planned 4.1 million euro pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Saale river has met significant local opposition. Residents and the 'Interessengemeinschaft Hochwasserschutz Altstadt' argue that the project, which could cost up to 10 million euros in total, poses flood risks and lacks sufficient traffic utility given the proximity of existing bridges. Critics also highlight environmental concerns, including the potential loss of 50,000 square meters of forest and threats to protected species such as bats and birds.
