Infrastructure failures disrupt traffic in Peru and Costa Rica
In Peru, the Pampatama modular bridge collapsed on September 26, 2026, on the route connecting the Aymaraes and Andahuaylas provinces. The incident occurred while two heavy-duty Sinotruk trucks were crossing the structure, leaving both vehicles stranded on the affected section. The collapse has interrupted traffic on the AP-107 route, a vital corridor linking the Interoceanic highway with the districts of Lucre, Chacña, and Tintay. Authorities are investigating whether the cause was related to infrastructure conditions, vehicle weight, or other factors.
In Costa Rica, heavy rains have worsened a sinkhole on route 141 near Santa Clara de San Carlos. The subsidence has created a half-meter depression, reducing the available roadway to less than one lane in the direction of Javillo-Santa Clara. The National Road Council (Conavi) has begun excavation work to inspect the subsurface and determine the cause of the damage. Drivers are advised to expect regulated traffic and delays in the area while repairs are assessed.
