Infrastructure failures spark resident protests in Paraguay and Argentina
Residents in different regions are protesting deteriorating infrastructure and inadequate municipal responses.
In the Paraíso neighborhood of Encarnación, Paraguay, locals report that road maintenance has been neglected for approximately nine years. Residents claim that despite the area transitioning from rural to residential status—resulting in property tax increases from G. 54,000 to approximately G. 620,000—the municipality has failed to provide necessary machinery or operators for road upkeep. The poor condition of the roads is causing frequent vehicle damage, forcing neighbors to organize and fund their own gravel repairs.
In Villa Amalia, Argentina, residents are facing health and safety risks after a truck from the state-owned company Sociedad Aguas del Tucumán caused a pavement collapse. The resulting large crater has become filled with sewage, creating foul odors and a sanitary hazard. Neighbors have expressed concern over the lack of safety barriers around the hole, particularly given the number of children playing in the area, and are demanding immediate repairs and sanitation from the utility provider.
