Infrastructure improvements underway in Czech Republic and Slovakia

In the Czech Republic, a flood protection park has been established on the Svratka River floodplain near Židlochovice. The project, funded by the Operational Programme Environment, aims to combine flood mitigation with river landscape restoration and biodiversity support. By creating a new dead arm of the river, ponds, and a revitalized riverbed, the project slows flood waves and provides habitats for wildlife. The effectiveness of these measures was demonstrated during the autumn 2024 floods, which saw significantly reduced risks due to controlled water overflow.

In Slovakia, Podtatranská vodárenská spoločnosť is launching a water main renewal project in Stará Ľubovňa valued at approximately 1.1 million euros. Funded largely through EU funds via the Slovakia 2021–2027 Program, the project involves replacing nearly 2.2 kilometers of aging public water pipes. The initiative aims to resolve frequent service interruptions, reduce water loss, and prevent damage to local infrastructure. Construction is expected to last at least 18 months, with measures in place to ensure continuous water supply to residents.
