Infrastructure investment shifts toward trade competitiveness and efficiency

Infrastructure is evolving from a capacity-building tool into a strategic driver of trade competitiveness. By aligning transport, customs, and digital systems, logistics networks can reduce friction, widen market access, and attract investment. Companies like DHL are integrating AI into practical applications such as demand forecasting, routing, and customs processes, while also investing in sustainable aviation fuel and electric ground vehicles to meet shifting trade lane demands.

In Bangladesh, the focus remains on the efficiency of public investment. Despite the necessity of infrastructure for economic transformation, many projects face delays, cost increases, and implementation challenges. Recent data shows a decline in the implementation of Annual Development Programmes, with a rate of only 67.52 percent in FY2025-26. Addressing these issues through rigorous feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, and improved oversight is considered essential for effective fiscal management amid tightening budget constraints.
