Infrastructure projects face challenges in Belize and United Kingdom

In Belize City, the replacement of the historic Swing Bridge has encountered new complications. Chief Engineer Evondale Moody reported that an assessment of an existing bridge on Regent Street West revealed it is in poor structural condition. Consequently, officials must now demolish the deteriorating structure and build a replacement to connect the new Hyde’s Lane crossing. This additional work is expected to cause traffic disruptions but is deemed necessary for the safety and efficiency of motorists crossing the Haulover Creek.

In London, the Hammersmith and Fulham Council has applied to England’s £1 billion Structures Fund to secure phased repairs for the Hammersmith Bridge. The bridge has been closed to motor vehicles since April 2019 due to microfractures in its cast-iron pedestals, though it remains open to pedestrians, cyclists, and river traffic. While the current funding bid focuses on preserving existing access, any future plans to allow motor vehicles to cross would require separate council approval and a formal transport-needs assessment.
