Infrastructure projects trigger traffic changes in Slovenia and Croatia
Major roadwork projects are set to impact traffic flow in Krško, Slovenia, and the Rijeka region, Croatia.
In Krško, the next phase of the G1-5 state road renovation begins on October 26, 2026. While the section from HE Krško to the Hočevarjev trg intersection will remain open, the stretch from Hočevarjev trg to the Zaton garage intersection will face a complete closure. This closure is expected to last until spring 2027. Local bus services on the green line will be rerouted via the HE Krško bridge, resulting in the temporary suspension of stops at Resa and Cankarjeva streets. The project aims to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists by introducing a one-way traffic regime, 86 new parking spaces, 2 km of cycling paths, and 1.2 km of sidewalks.
In Croatia, reconstruction and expansion work on the Matulji–Opatija junction is scheduled to begin on the afternoon of October 23, 2026. The project, executed by GP Krk, will be implemented in three phases. The first phase involves closing ramps 3 and 4 for 50 days. The second phase will focus on the Živice south viaduct, implementing one-way traffic toward Rijeka for 30 days. The final phase will shift traffic to the new Živice north viaduct for 30 days. Authorities warn that these works may increase traffic congestion at the Diračje junction and surrounding roads in the Rijeka area.
