Infrastructure updates: Peru bridge maintenance and Guatemala road funding delays
In Peru, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), through Provías Nacional, is supervising reinforcement work on the Los Ángeles and El Palomar bridges in Chaclacayo and Chosica. These interventions aim to ensure structural integrity and maintain vehicle transit during intense rainfall associated with El Niño. Work includes reinforcing containment walls, rock placement, and technical inspections of the roadway. These routine actions are part of a strategy to strengthen the Central Highway, a vital route for goods and passengers between Lima and central Peru.
In Guatemala, the Direction of Priority Road Projects (Dipp) faces significant administrative delays. According to a report by the Foundation for the Development of Guatemala (Fundesa), the agency has not fully functioned due to the lack of approved regulations. Furthermore, there is a backlog in the allocation of Q70 million in mandatory funds. These funds, intended for the Priority Road Projects Fund (Fovip) and the General Directorate of Road Protection and Safety (Provial), have faced delays of up to 17 months regarding specific transfers required for organizational and operational strengthening.
