ING scanner users to lose iDeal payments as platform shifts to Wero

Starting in October, customers of ING who rely on the bank's Scanner for internet banking will no longer be able to pay with iDeal. The Dutch payments scheme is being replaced by a new platform called Wero, and the Scanner hardware cannot support the technical requirements of Wero. ING will therefore require these customers to use the bank’s mobile app for iDeal payments, while other online banking functions will remain available on the Scanner.

Customers without a smartphone or who prefer not to use the app will need to use alternative payment methods such as bank transfers, credit cards, or invoice payments. ING says it will encourage scanner users who are able and willing to switch to the app. Other Dutch banks have reported similar scanner usage: Rabobank estimates about 8 % of its transactions use its scanner, and ABN Amro reports roughly 250 000 scanner users (around 4 % of its total customers). The transition to Wero is being coordinated with other banks and the Dutch Central Bank (DNB).
