Ingenio San Pedro to be managed by Veracruz state after return to Federation

The Ingenio San Pedro sugar mill in Veracruz will avoid permanent closure following negotiations between its owner, Grupo Porres, and government authorities. The company has agreed to return the facility to the Mexican Federal Government, which will then likely transfer its operation to the state government of Veracruz.

Governor Rocío Nahle García announced that a decree is being prepared to formalize the state's management of the plant. To ensure a smooth transition, the current owner will settle all outstanding debts and liquidate existing labor contracts for unionized and temporary workers. Once these obligations are met, the Veracruz government intends to rehire the workforce to maintain operations and secure the upcoming December harvest.

The intervention aims to prevent mass unemployment and economic paralysis in the Los Tuxtlas and Papaloapan regions, where the mill supports over 500 direct employees and numerous sugarcane producers and transporters. While the facility requires significant maintenance and infrastructure investment, the state administration has committed to its recovery to sustain regional sugar production.
