Ingenio San Pedro to transition to federal public management
The Ingenio San Pedro sugar mill in Veracruz is transitioning from private management to a federal decentralized public organism. Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García confirmed the move, stating the primary objective is to mitigate the social and economic impact that a permanent closure would cause in the Papaloapan and Los Tuxtlas regions.
To avoid trade disputes and issues regarding government subsidies under bilateral agreements with the United States, all sugar produced by the facility will be sold exclusively within the Mexican domestic market. The state and federal governments are coordinating to manage the transition, which includes maintenance work to ensure the mill can begin receiving raw materials for the December harvest.
As part of the transition, the Secretariat of Labor has initiated negotiations with the outgoing private administration to finalize the liquidation of current employees, ensuring their rights and seniority are respected. While the government does not intend to become a permanent sugar producer, future models such as cooperatives or private concessions remain possibilities.
