Inglewood faces $30.8 million budget deficit

The city of Inglewood is facing a projected $30.8 million budget deficit for the upcoming year, marking its largest deficit in at least two decades. While expenditures from the general fund have roughly doubled since the opening of SoFi Stadium in 2020, revenue growth has plateaued over the last five years.

Mayor James Butts has stated that residents should not be concerned, noting that the city maintains reserves of more than $150 million to cover the current gap. The City Council recently approved a budget proposal to spend $279 million from the general fund this year.

A key factor in addressing the long-term deficit is Measure AT, a ballot measure scheduled for the November 3 election. Officials estimate that if passed, the measure could generate between $45 million and $50 million in additional tax revenue from tickets to major events, potentially eliminating the deficit. If the city continues to outpace revenue and depletes its reserves, officials warn of potential staff layoffs and service cuts.
