Inglewood Unified nears end of decade-long financial receivership

Inglewood Unified is nearing the end of a decade-long financial crisis and may soon regain local control. Following a July 2026 report from the state’s Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT), the district was found to have met all necessary standards regarding finance, governance, staffing, student achievement, and facilities.

If the district maintains these improvements for another year, the local board of education could regain the authority to approve budgets and make key decisions in 2027. The district entered receivership in 2012 after borrowing $29 million from the state to balance its budget, leading to the appointment of outside administrators.

County-appointed administrator James Morris reported high attendance rates at the start of the new school year, with 95% to 96% of students present. Despite the progress, the district continues to face budgetary and enrollment challenges common to many California school districts.
