Ingo Schulze's new novel explores East German history

Author Ingo Schulze has released a new novel, ‘Das Wasser im August’, which has been longlisted for the German Book Prize. The work explores the tension between truth and fiction, utilizing two different timelines and narrative styles. The frame story follows an older writer in present-day Mecklenburg, while the inner novella focuses on a 16-year-old named Thomas during the summer of 1979 in the GDR.

Schulze, who serves as the President of the German Academy for Language and Literature, uses his writing to engage with East German history and the societal shifts following German reunification. In discussions regarding the novel, Schulze expressed skepticism toward ‘Ostalgie’ (East German nostalgia), noting that while people may miss the sense of agency felt during the 1989 reforms, the desire to return to life under an authoritarian system remains an unreal concept to him.
