Ingolstadt Krautfest highlights regional cabbage harvest crisis
The Krautfest 2026 in Ingolstadt drew large crowds for its traditional displays of agricultural machinery and livestock, but the event highlighted a significant crisis in local cabbage production.
Farmer and Deputy Mayor Franz Wöhrl reported that extreme summer heat has severely hindered crop growth. Although only a third of the harvest has been collected, yields are described as weak. While irrigation has kept plants alive, the heat has caused issues on less fertile, gravelly soils.
Potential consequences for the harvest include reduced weight and variations in color and nutrient content, as the cabbage has not yet reached the desired level of whiteness. Wöhrl noted that there are no simple solutions for future years, as extreme heat poses physical limits to plant growth regardless of farm management. The economic viability of the sector remains dependent on weather, soil quality, market demand, and processing capabilities.
