Đinh Tiến Hùng sentenced to 16.5 years for illegal mining
The Hanoi People's Court has sentenced Đinh Tiến Hùng, the former Standing Deputy Secretary of the Yen Bai Provincial Youth Union, to 16 years and 6 months in prison. The sentence consists of 13 years for the illegal use of explosives and 3 years and 6 months for violating regulations on resource extraction.
The ruling follows a re-investigation after a previous court in Yen Bai had declared Hùng innocent in November 2023. The case was subsequently transferred to the Ministry of Public Security for further investigation. Prosecutors established that between July and December 2020, Hùng conspired with several others, including executives from Tuyen Huy Co., Ltd., to illegally mine ore at the Nui Ngang mine in Yen Bai province to recover a 10 billion VND investment.
In addition to Hùng, nine other defendants received various sentences, ranging from suspended sentences of 30 months to 16 years in prison. The court noted that the defendants acted out of greed. Mitigating factors for Hùng included his past work achievements and a voluntary 50 million VND contribution made by his family to the state budget.
