Inha University professor wins Institute of Navigation award for satellite navigation research

Professor Jong-hoon Won of Inha University and researcher Young-jin Song have been awarded the ‘2025 Most Cited Manuscript’ by the Institute of Navigation (ION). Their research, titled ‘GNSS Software-Defined Radio: History, Current Developments, and Standardization Efforts,’ was published in the journal NAVIGATION: Journal of the Institute of Navigation.

The paper examines the evolution, technical trends, and standardization of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Software-Defined Radio (SDR). Unlike traditional hardware-based receivers that require physical replacement to support new signals, SDR technology allows for flexible updates through software, enabling the application of new satellite signals and algorithms without changing equipment.

The research involved international co-authors from the United States, Germany, Italy, and Spain. It proposes directions for improving ION SDR standards and addresses the interoperability of data and auxiliary information. This technology is critical for Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) infrastructure, supporting future industries such as autonomous driving, urban air mobility (UAM), low-earth orbit satellite communications, and lunar exploration.
