Inifap develops new bean varieties to combat drought and pests
Researchers from the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (Inifap) have introduced new bean varieties designed to improve agricultural productivity and climate resilience in Mexico.
In Sinaloa, a new variety named ‘Munni’ has been released for the 2026-2027 autumn-winter cycle. According to researcher Raúl Hipólito Sauceda Acosta, this variety features a shorter vegetative cycle and a longer shelf life due to higher resistance to oxidation and pests. The shorter cycle allows farmers to potentially plant a second crop, such as corn or sorghum, following the bean harvest.
In Veracruz, Inifap has developed the ‘Verdín’ variety. This precocious variety is designed to mature more quickly, allowing farmers to harvest before the onset of terminal droughts that frequently affect coastal regions. This development aims to protect yields from adverse climatic conditions and extreme weather patterns.
